"The Goal of Integral Yoga, and the birthright of all individuals is to realize the spiritual unity behind the diversity throughout creation and to live harmoniously as members of one universal family. This goal is achieved by the maintaining of our natural condition:
Attain this through asanas, pranayama, the chanting of holy names,
- a body of optimal health and strength
- senses under total control
- a mind well disciplined, clear, and calm
- an intellect as sharp as a razor
- a will as strong and pliable as steel
- a heart full of unconditional love and compassion
- an ego as pure as crystal
- a life filled with supreme peace and joy
self-discipline, selfless-action, mantra Japa, meditation, study, and reflection." -Sri Swami Satchidananda
His Holiness Sri Swami Satchidanandaji Maharaj (Sri Gurudev) (1914-2002) founded Integral Yoga® in 1966, the worldwide Integral Yoga® Institutes, and Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville®, a dynamic community. He is regarded by many as an apostle of peace and served as a living example of the teachingings of Yoga and its goal of self-realization. Dedicated to the principle that "Truth is One, Paths are Many," his teachings bring together people of all backgrounds and beliefs so that they can learn to respect all different paths and realize their common spirit and the universality of their spiritual goals. Sri Gurudev served on the advisory boards of numerous peace and interfaith organizations and authored many books, including To Know Your Self, The Living Gita, and The Golden Present. Among the many awards and honors he received are the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award, the Humanitarian Award of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, the Juliet Hollister Interfaith Award, and the U Thant Peace Award. www.swamisatchidananda.org
Integral Yoga® is the complete Yoga, which integrates all aspects of life and maintains our natural condition of an easeful body, peaceful mind, and useful life. It combines various methods of Yoga, including physical postures, breathing practices, and relaxation techniques (Hatha Yoga), selfless service (Karma Yoga), devotion and prayer (Bhakti Yoga), meditation techniques (Raja Yoga), mantra repitition (Japa Yoga), and self-inquiry (Jnana Yoga). The practices and principles of Integral Yoga® are the foundation of Dr. Dean Ornish's landmark work in reversing heart disease and Dr. Michael Lerner's noted Commonweal Cancer Help program.
BRIEF HISTORY OF INTEGRAL YOGA INSTITUTE OF NJ
The first New Jersey Institute began in 1969 when a couple from Montclair asked the New York IYI for help in opening a yoga center. The classes were held in their home and their first teacher was Margabandhu Martarano.
In 1970 the location was moved to a loft in Garfield, which also included a thriving food co-op. By this time, there were now eight teachers and twelve classes held weekly.
In 1984 the teaching staff had grown to twelve, our weekly class schedule was growing and a search began for a new location. The home for the next fourteen years was on Broadway in Elmwood Park. A decision to purchase the present site in Fair Lawn was made in 1995, when more space was again needed for the increased classes and workshops, including Beginner and Intermediate Hatha Yoga classes, meditation courses, workshops in various aspects of health and nutrition, weekly pujas and guest speakers, Through the generous support of a long-time student of Margabandhu and other contributors, the purchase was made possible. A year later, after much renovation plus help and prayers of students and family members, we held a grand opening and dedication ceremony which our Beloved Guru, Sri Swami Satchidananda attended. Gurudev blessed our efforts and made us realize that through selfless service and hard work, the IYI would thrive through the coming years. He visited many more times and we know that all this could not have happened without his inspiration.
We currently have over thirty active volunteer teachers, offering thirteen regular weekly Beginner hatha classes, plus regular Beginner II, Intermediate, and Meditation classes. We also send our teachers to many area adult schools, seminars and private classes. We have sponsored an Intermediate Yoga Teacher Training, Meditation Teacher Training, Raja Yoga Teacher Training, Cardiac Yoga Teacher Training, as well as our annual Basic Hatha Yoga Teacher Training.
Our teachers are all nationally certified with over 200 hours of Practicum and Philosophy Instruction. Our school is registered with The Yoga Alliance at both 200 and 500 hour levels. The Yoga Alliance is a national organization, that sets minimum standards of capability for all Yoga teachers. Continuing Education is important to our teachers and most do go on to take additional yoga training for specialized populations.
We are proud that our Institute is still a dynamic service to the community, offering a health food store with many hard-to-find nutritional items, a book store for continuing education and gift-giving, as well as regular specialty programs, including highly acclaimed guest speakers, nutrition and vegetarian classes, special kirtans, social dinners, and a variety of holiday celebrations. This Institute is here to support anyone on their journey toward wellness of body and mind.
